So, you’re making a Webtoon?
Um… eventually.
Sometime in July, I recieved my first digital drawing apparatus, a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8. After 1 or 2 completed pieces(the very first is below),
I wanted to jump straight into my first comic. Of course, I knew it wasn’t wise for me to go straight into some 200 episode Webtoon, so I settled on a 5-page test comic, in full color. It starred my cast of 8 4th grader OC’s partially inspired by people I know, but mostly aspects of myself.
About 2 weeks of effort later, I came out with this looker.
As it turns out, I should have started even smaller. I didn’t realize this until after I spent the next two months slowly and painfully squirting out the next four pages.
Yep. Two months, five pages. To be fair, they looked marginally better each time.
I won’t say that the experience was a complete waste, in fact, this comic taught me a ton: I need to learn how to transition from sketch to lineart faster, I need to have realistic expectations for how fast I can draw and write a comic, and most of all, DON’T USE COLOR.
So, now that I’ve learned that I have a lot to learn, it’s time to go smaller, right?
Uh…
I decided to start the first episode of my long-form Webtoon project. This continued for about two or three weeks before I looked at the progress I made and realized… no. I don’t feel ready for this. The lineart could be better. More importantly, I could be muhfaster. More importantly yet, I could be having more fun.
I finally decided to simply do smaller comic strips in my sketchbook for the time being, which, in retrospect, I should have been doing more of before I got the Digital Drawing Apparatus. Well, no point dwelling in the past.
Check out a recent one I made.
These strips aren’t the most clean or “postable”, but I’m genuinely having fun now. I think it’s good to start there.
Bonus: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
is really good.
And you can quote me on that.
is really good.
I don’t feel like writing a full review, so I’ll leave my quick thoughts here:
The soundtrack had some lovely tunes, animation is amazing(pretty much a given with modern stop-motion movies, but still worth mentioning), Candlewick is my favorite character, Cricket close second, Pinocchio’s voice actor, Gregory Mann’s singing voice is OTHERWORLDY
Rating: 8/10 you should watch it.
Wow, I actually came back after the first post! Doesn’t that make you want to subscribe? Who knows, I might be back next week too.
